How to use this itinerary

Two days is the sweet spot for Jilin City: one day for the city itself, one for the spectacle. Pick your version — winter (December–February), built around the rime ice, or year-round for the rest of the calendar. Day 1 is the same either way.

Think of it as a slow-travel weekend in a city the guidebooks forgot — the Chinese answer to two days in, say, Porto or Ljubljana: small enough to walk, strange enough to remember. Except here the strangeness is rime ice at −25°C and blood sausage for dinner.

New here? Start with the Jilin City Travel Guide 2026. Coming in winter? Read the rime ice guide and packing list first.

Day 1 — The city (any season)

Afternoon: arrive & settle in. Arrive by high-speed rail at Jilin Railway Station or via Changchun Longjia Airport (see how to get to Jilin). Check into your hotel — where to stay — and drop your bags. If you land before noon, add a lazy riverside warm-up walk.

Mid-afternoon: Jilin Confucian Temple (吉林文庙) — 1.5 to 2 hours. The Qing dynasty’s first Confucian temple in the Northeast (1736; moved and expanded 1909). Walk the central axis in order — screen wall, Pan Pond, Lingxing Gate, Dacheng Hall, Chongsheng Hall — and don’t miss the story: Manchu rulers building Confucius’s temple at the empire’s edge. Full guide: Jilin Confucian Temple.

Evening: the riverfront & your first Jilin dinner. Walk Songjiang Middle Road along the Songhua River as the lights come on — this is Jilin’s prettiest hour. Then dinner: order guobaorou (锅包肉) and suan cai stewed pork at a busy local restaurant. Ordering survival kit: what to eat in Jilin.

Night (optional): Century Square’s music fountain area for night views, then an early night — Day 2 starts brutally early in winter.

Day 2 — Winter version (December–February)

5:30 AM: depart for Rime Island (雾凇岛). Yes, really. The rime is a dawn phenomenon — by 9–10 AM it’s melting. Arrange a car the night before (hotel front desk or Didi), drive ~1 hour north to Wusong Island in Wulajie Manchu Town, and walk the frosted riverside as the sun hits it. Dress for −25°C: this is the coldest you’ll be all trip. Everything you need: rime ice guide.

10:30 AM: back to the city, thaw out. Brunch somewhere warm — noodle soup is the correct recovery food. Nap if you need it; nobody will judge you.

Afternoon: Beishan Park (北山公园). Jilin’s beloved hill park: temples, pavilions, and the best city panorama. Climb to the Picking Moon Pavilion, look back over the river valley, and warm up with the climb itself. In temple-fair season (around Lunar New Year) the park hosts Jilin’s famous fair — crowds, snacks, folk performances.

Evening: farewell feast. Manchu hotpot or the sha zhu cai “killing the pig” spread (white pork + blood sausage) — the heaviest, happiest meal of the trip. You’ve earned it.

Day 2 — Year-round version (March–November)

Morning: Beishan Park (北山公园). Same park, gentler weather. Temples, pavilions, morning tai chi, city views — Jilin’s daily life at its most photogenic. 2–3 hours, easy pace.

Midday: jianfen street & old-town lunch. Track down the jianfen (煎粉) snack street for pan-fried starch jelly with chili oil and vinegar — Jilin’s signature street food, no Western equivalent — then graze: grilled skewers (chuan’r), cold noodles (冷面) in summer.

Afternoon: riverfront & Songhua Lake option. Walk the Songjiang Middle Road riverbank in daylight, or take a half-day trip to Songhua Lake (松花湖) southeast of the city — boat rides, lakeside fish restaurants (order the lake fish stewed in an iron pot). Ask your hotel about current boat schedules; they vary by season.

Evening: riverside dinner, night walk, done.

Extend it: the third day

  • Winter: Beidahu Ski Resort — one of China’s better ski mountains, about an hour from the city. Full guide: Beidahu Ski Resort.
  • Any season: Wulajie Manchu Town deep-dive — Manchu hotpot in its home setting, combined with Rime Island in winter.
  • Summer: Songhua Lake deserves a full slow day, not a rushed afternoon.

Practical notes

  • Book ahead: rime-season hotels (Dec–Feb weekends) and your Rime Island car. Everything else can stay loose.
  • Getting around: Didi (English interface) or hotel-arranged cars; the city center is walkable.
  • Cash & payment: set up Alipay/WeChat Pay before arrival; carry some yuan as backup.
  • The one non-negotiable: in winter, the 5:30 AM alarm. Sleep in and you miss the entire reason you came.
